Coconut oil is a very versatile product with so many health benefits and uses (including using as a healthy cooking oil) however recently I have started using this on my skin and hair as well as in my meals! Here’s why….
After a hectic couple of months I was beginning to notice a negative effect on my skin. It felt dry, dehydrated and simply lacking in “life”. I had tried switching around my moisturiser but nothing seemed to rehydrate it as much as I felt it needed.
Going back a couple of months ago a friend of mine mentioned to me that she used it on her hair as a deep hair conditioner so I decided to look in to whether it would be good for my skin. The answer was yes! Yes…yes…YES!
On a rare Sunday afternoon off I decided to cleanse my skin and slap the coconut oil on my face. As this comes in a solid form I used a teaspoon to get a small amount out of the jar and warmed it up in my hands. This happens almost immediately. So I layered it up and let the oil take its course for the duration of the afternoon. Pretty much immediately my skin felt amazing! A little bit greasy yes but in fairness I had spooned an excessive amount on to my face as it felt in need of a treat! By the time it came to bed time my skin felt soft, rehydrated and plump (insert lame gag) again. I topped up the oil before I went to bed to use as a night cream. I can’t recommend this simple affordable multi-use product enough! I don’t use it every day but I treat my skin to this a few times a week and on some evening (overnight like a night cream) if I feel its needed or if I just feel like indulging my skin. The skin is our foundation for a flawless makeup base so you can really make a difference to your application from what you eat and how you treat your skin.
Why is it a great moisturiser?
It is entirely natural and although it is in solid form, it melts on to your skin and soaks deep in to your pores (more than an ordinary moisturiser).
How else can I use it?
- It make an excellent makeup remover. Makeup should always be removed before going to bed to allow skin to breathe. Some makeup removers can be harsh on your skin but this requires very little effort. Simply apply the coconut oil over your face and leave for 5 minutes. Remove with warm water and a mild soap and your makeup will glide off easily. You could always repeat this process for a double cleanse;
- It soothes dry hands;
- It can be used as a natural shaving cream. Its skin soothing properties will really hydrate your legs after shaving;
- It makes an excellent hair deep conditioner! Comb a dollop through your hair and place a towel over your pillow (or wear a shower cap) and shampoo as normal the following morning;
- Add some brown sugar and make your own homemade natural bodyscrub.
Lastly, coconut oil can be used for healing and treating infections. When it is applied to an infected area it creates a chemical layer which protects from bacteria, viruses, dust and fungi.
This magical little product is available to buy easily in supermarkets and is cheap! Next time you are out shopping, pop it in your basket and start reaping the benefits!
