It’s no secret that doing makeup on mature skin is one of my favourite parts of my job as a Makeup Artist. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a visible shift in confidence when showing a client their makeup after it’s been applied.
Quite often clients who are aged 40 and upwards have been bringing up children and grandchildren and spend years looking after everyone else leaving themselves little time to indulge in themselves. Within this timeframe, its very common to get stuck in a rut with makeup or even stop wearing it all together.
Some women lose confidence as they get older… changes in skin type, trends, hormones and age all play a big part in this. I spend lots of time with women of all ages in the makeup chair. I see lots of clients for my popular makeup lessons (tailored private 1:1’s in my studio) but I always see the biggest transformations doing bridal party makeup and special occasion makeup.
The combination of having your makeup applied professionally, hair styled and wearing a special outfit boosts confidence to a whole new visible level. It’s a great feeling to see the change in a Mother of the Bride or glam grandma once they’re polished up to their very best. I think we’re all guilty of neglecting ourselves from time to time – and sometimes for long periods… it’s nice to remember how it feels to feel great about ourselves. Everyone deserves to feel confident and a little reminder what we can look like as our best version can be the boost we need!
I did a wedding recently where the Mother of the Bride was a bit nervous about getting her makeup done. She hadn’t had a trial appointment beforehand so I had never met her before. She was a very natural makeup wearer and was naturally apprehensive. With a bit of reassurance, she was over the moon with the end result. I listened to her concerns, adapted the makeup and by the end of application, she even had some small lashes added to enhance her eye makeup. To give her that feeling of feeling fabulous made my day… and doesn’t she look amazing??
If you have mature skin, you need to read my top 5 tips for getting the most from your makeup application
- Your skin needs to be hydrated. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Makeup always goes on better on hydrated skin, regardless of age. Mature skin can often be dry so ensure you are moisturing your skin at least twice a day as standard, morning and night
- Add radiance to your skin. Mature skin can look dull in appearance so hydration is the basic prep before starting your makeup but choosing an illuminating primer which add a very flattering glow, brightening up the complexion and giving the appearance of youthful, plump skin
- Keep your foundation lightweight. Age, dehydration, illness, hangovers…. they show our fine lines off – and changing your foundation is a must especially for mature skin. Using heavy products will look aging – and there’s not a woman on this planet who wants to look older than their years. Foundation should be lightweight – so swap your base to a tinted moisturiser, a BB or CC cream for a more youthful look
- Swap your bronzer and blusher to a cream product. Use cream products on your skin to retain the radiance. Cream products are more flattering and won’t sit in any fine lines
- Have fun! Makeup is an extension of our personality. So add a pop of colour – the lips are the perfect place to experiment, compliment the colour according the season or simply coordinate with your outfit. Make sure the colour is modern… and as a bonus tip, avoid anything glittery on your eyes! Glitter highlights fine lines and the skin on and the around the eyes is very thin. It’s one of the first places we show signs of aging
